Tomb Raider (2013) Review

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f1/TombRaider2013.jpgWell adventure lovers put on your explorer's outfit and sharpen your machete cause Tomb Raider is back and is looking better than ever!

March is finally here and one of the first releases this month was Tomb Raider (2013). The game is an action adventure style game that quite resembles the Uncharted series in story telling and gameplay but is also very different from it.

The story of the game revolves around Lara Croft a young and ambitious archeologist who is part of an investigation crew trying to find the ancient kingdom of Yamatai. While the lead archeologist is desperately searching for clues about the location of the long lost kingdom Lara comes forward with a hunch which the group agrees to follow. Unfortunately a mighty storm makes their ship crash as they reach their destination and the young Croft is separated from the others. Now Lara has to remember everything she had been taught all these years in order to survive in this cruel island. The dialogues are interesting and the expressions of the characters are very realistic while the whole setting is really gripping. I found myself beating the whole game in 2 days, not because it was short, but because i could not stop playing it. I was lucky enough to even get a few hours of sleep.

The gameplay of Tomb Raider consists of point A to point B missions for its main story. Along the way Lara will come across the hostile inhabitants of the island, who still fanatically worship queen Himiko and will do everything in their power to honor her. In order to defeat them Lara uses a number of weapons such as a bow, a pistol and a shotgun. The game does have some kind of stealth aspect to it, but it is not as polished as i would like. Don't get me wrong. The stealth mechanics are just fine. Only thing i would want more is a bit of variety in enemy behaviors and maybe a couple of different melee takedowns. Still it is a great addition to the game and really complements the whole one-girl-against-ten-guys experience. However the main story is just a small fraction of what Tomb Raider (2013) has to offer. There's a great amount of side content in the game. When you are not listening to a dramatic talk between two of the characters or dealing with the "zealots" of the island you will find yourself scouring the places you have already passed to find all the destructible totems hidden on the trees or collectible artifacts stored in secret chests. Those allow you to complete challenges that grant you extra experience points and getting you closer to the next skill point. When you get bored of the single player gameplay (if that's possible) then fear not. Tomb  Raider (2013) features a multi player option that allows you to take on people from around the world to see who the greatest tomb raider is. There is a number of different modes to play in and all of them are fun as hell.

Finally the verdict of this review. Tomb Raider (2013) is an amazing game and a really great way to reboot the series. It looks like Crystal Dynamics did their homework on Lara and her legend and have indeed delivered us a near-perfect experience. My one and only complaint about this game is the absence of a New Game + but i guess i can just play through the story again. Whoever enjoys a good story with a little ass-kicking action in the middle this is the game you have been waiting for. Play it and experience an adventure through the eyes of a Tomb Raider in the making.

Rating : 9/10

  1. verry nice review, couldn't agree more in most points, not verry detailed but a overal look of the game (good for not spoiling the fun), nice explenation about the gameplay and storyline. also love the game, only 2 things im missing about the game. with the intro you just hop in when they alnmost arrive at the island. there's no video or even better gameplay about her graduation, or how she finds out about the island (you do have this with uncharted) but thats an idea for the next game, also the gameplay is pretty short, it would have been better if they didn't put so much effort on the multiplayer, since there is rarely someone online.

futher an awesome game!! 9/10 for me.

    1. First of all thank you for sharing your opinion with us. And you are right about the review not having many details but as a gamer i personally hate it when reviewers spoil some of the best elements of the game and i dont want to be one of them. I also agree with you that there could have been some more backstory to the game but then again isn't the game itself the backstory of the whole series? So add backstory to the backstory???? I don't know. Anyway overall the game rules and we both agree on that :)
